1. Joseph Tomkies 1 was born in 1770 1 and died in 1814, at age 44.1

Joseph married Elizabeth Thornton 1 in May 1795.1

General Notes: NOTE FROM WAYNE SCOTT PHILLIPS:
Joseph is probably a grandson or great grandson of Dr. Charles Tomkies of VA, but we don't know what the connection is.

NOTE FROM DOUGLAS SIMPSON TOMKIES:
On Joseph's death Elizabeth took the kids to her dad's (Col. John Thornton) plantation, Mayfair.

Children from this marriage were:

   2 F    i. Sarah T. Tomkies 2 was born about 1800.2

General Notes: NOTE FROM WAYNE SCOTT PHILLIPS, 26-JUN-2005:
Cousin Simpson (Douglas Simpson Tomkies) didn't mention Sarah among Edward's sibs, but she is the right age and in Edward's household in the 1850 Hanover Co., VA, census, so I assume she is a sib. And it would have been odd for Joseph and Elizabeth, m 1795, to have had no kids until Mary in 1804.

3 F    ii. Mary Tomkies 1 was born in 1804 1 and died in 1880, at age 76.1

General Notes: NOTE FROM DOUGLAS SIMPSON TOMKIES:
Never married.

4 F    iii. Elizabeth Tomkies 1 was born in 1806 1 and died in 1882, at age 76.1

General Notes: NOTE FROM DOUGLAS SIMPSON TOMKIES:
Never married.

+ 5 M    iv. Edward Morgan Tomkies 1 was born on 1 Mar 1811 1 and died on 3 Aug 1882, at age 71.1

Edward married Mary Douglas Christian 1 in Jan 1833.1

General Notes: NOTE FROM DOUGLAS SIMPSON TOMKIES:
The Christians descend from Ewinrigg Christian, dempster on Isle of Mann in 1422. Letitia Christian 1790-9/20/42, m Pres. John Tyler 1790-62. Letita was first cousin once removed with Mary Christian

Second Generation (Children)

Edward married Mary Douglas Christian 1 in Jan 1833.1

General Notes: NOTE FROM DOUGLAS SIMPSON TOMKIES:
The Christians descend from Ewinrigg Christian, dempster on Isle of Ma nn in 1422. Letitia Christian 1790-9/20/42, m Pres. John Tyler 1790-62. Le tita was first cousin once removed with Mary Christian

Children from this marriage were:

   6 M    i. John Cooke Tomkies 1 was born in 1831 1 and died before 1840.3

Never married.

Edgar was in Benton township, Webster Co., MO for the 1880 census. He w as a teacher and was in the household of Charles Hughes. He was in Ashland township, Hanover Co., VA for the 1910 census. He was in the household of James Ward Vaughan, the husband of his brother Augustine's daughter Gertrude, and listed as "wife's uncle" and single. Cousin Simpson (Doug las Simpson Tomkies) said he never married.

Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation: 1880, Teacher.4

   8 M    iii. Joseph S. Tomkies 2 was born about 1836.2

General Notes: NOTE FROM WAYNE SCOTT PHILLIPS, 2 JUL 2005:
Cousin Simpson (Douglas Simpson Tomkies) didn't mention Joseph in his not es and said Edward had only 9 kids, so there is a slight chance that had w as a relative who was taken in. But Joseph is in the 1850 census in Edward 's household and fills a gap in births.

   9 F    iv. Gertrude F. Tomkies 2 was born about 1838.2

General Notes: NOTE FROM WAYNE SCOTT PHILLIPS, 2 JUL 2005:
Cousin Simpson (Douglas Simpson Tomkies) didn't know her name but mentioned her.

   10 M    v. John Henry Tomkies 1 was born in 1839 1 and died in 1878, at age 39.1

General Notes: NOTE FROM DOUGLAS SIMPSON TOMKIES:

The physicians decided to remove her to the sanitarium where an operation will be performed in raising the fracture. It was th ought she would have to remain under care for 10days but was at that ti me getting on better than could be expected considering. General Notes: NOTE FROM WAYNE SCOTT PHILLIPS, 2 JUL 2005:
His name is James W. Vaughan in the 1910 census and J. Ward Vaughan in t he 1920 census, thus James Ward Vaughan.

13. Rev. Charles William Tomkies 1 7 (Edward Morgan5, Joseph1) was born on 18 Nov 1848 in Hanover Co., VA,8 died on 28 Aug 1907 in Dallas, Dallas Co., TX, at age 58,8 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Kingston, Desoto Parish, LA.

General Notes: NOTE FROM DOUGLAS SIMPSON TOMKIES:
C. W. was born on a 1500 acre plantation "Spring Grove" near Doswell. May be all the kids were born there. C. W., A. J., T. W. Tomkies were conscripted into Sturdivant's Battery (artillery).

NOTE FROM WAYNE SCOTT PHILLIPS:
The Nelsons and Scotts book says that C. W. is the son of Maj. John Franc is Tomkies of DeSoto Parish. But no online records of the family include h im. And online records show the Major's kids all born in another VA county, not Hanover as the book gives for C. W.. This is cleared up by info from my mother's 2nd cousin, Douglas Simpson Tomkies. He said th at C. W. is the son of Edward Tomkies of Hanover Co. and provides sever al ancestors as well as Edward's other kids and details of their lives. Simpson was a genealogy so I trust his info.

C. W. is in Hanover Co., VA in his dad Edward's h/h in the 1850 censu s. He and family don't appear in a census until he and Sarah are in New Or leans in 1900. In between, my mom said he was called to pastor a church in DeSoto Parish sometime after the war. He probably heard about the ne ed through his distant Tomkies (John Francis) and/or Scott (James) cousin s. It was probably Evergreen Baptist in Kingston. He was president of Louisiana Baptist Convention, 1880s. president of Keatchie (Keachi) College, Keatchie, DeSoto Parish, LA, 1889-1899. From at least Jan 1901 to May 19 04 he was pastor of "the Baptist church" in Cameron, Milam Co., TX, according to postings of obits and marriage notices on the Milam board on rootsweb.

Charles married Sarah Viola Scott .8 9 10

General Notes: Milam Co., TX, Cameron Herald – Thur., 1 May 1902

General Notes: NOTE FROM CHARLES EDWARD PHILLIPS:
Doswald earned a Ph.D. and taught for a while at U.T. and Austin, but was dismissed for his socialist leanings. Then he taught high school in Dal las. He never married and died intestate. I have his few effects: tie p in ("C. D. Tomkies", Tulane, 1906) tie clip, cuff links, etc.

NOTE FROM WAYNE SCOTT PHILLIPS:
My mother said his name was "Doswald," and affectionately referred to h im as "Dar-dar." The Keatchie College Annual Catalog for 1889-1890 gives his name as "Dozwell Tomkies." The 1891-1892 Annual Catalog has "Doswell Tomkies." The _Nelson's and Scott's_ book has "Charles Boswell Tomkies." Going over cousin Simpson Tomkies' (my mother's 2nd cousin) letters showed that C. W. Tomkies' family, Dar-dar's dad, was from Hanover Co., VA. One prominent family there was the Doswell family, and the town of Doswell sti ll exists. So I'm certain the name is Doswell.

General Notes: NOTE FROM MARGARET EVELYN (TOMKIES) PHILLIPS:
Member of DAR, through Tomkies line. She was named after another relative named "Sallie Battle."

NOTE FROM WAYNE SCOTT PHILLIPS:
"Sallie" was often a nickname for "Sarah," so her given name and that of h er namesake may be "Sarah Battle." "Battle" as a middle name may have come from a marriage to a Battle family. My mother inherited a diamond from her "Auntie Tat" (Sallie Battle), maybe her wedding ring. The diamo nd is mine cut, and went into my wife's wedding ring.

Sallie married Dr. George B. Dickson .7

My mother grew up at 5831 (5851?) Marquita Lane in Dallas (address from her grandma Wheeler-Jenkins death certificate) which had a large playhouse in back. The playhouse was still there when we drove by in the mid 1970 s. About the time she graduated from UT, about 1942, her parents moved to 6911 Medow Lake in Dallas (address from her dad's interment record ). I visited that house when we went to Dallas for her dad's funeral. I on ly remember that the attic access was by a pull down stairway. My mother inherited a diamond from her "Auntie Tat" (Sallie Battle), maybe her wedding ring. The diamond is mine cut, and went into my wife's wedding ring. My mother was known as Evelyn to family, friends, and associates.

Her grave is on east edge of cemetery.
